Slowly becoming a more and more widespread pass time around the world, RC jet flying is already a very popular hobby. RC jets, or radio controlled jets, are very different from their cousin the RC helicopter. The RC helicopter can hover and go left, right, up, down, forwards, and backwards. Sure, that’s cool, but the RC jet can reach speeds up to and maybe even over 100 mph! Any one who loves speed can appreciate that, especially out of a toy. The best thing yet? It is radio controlled, so you are the one in control of the 100 mph projectile an RC jet can become.
There are many different types of RC jet planes; the most popular is referred to as a “ducted fan” jet. They are called this because the engine and propeller, what makes it fly, are safely tucked away in their own little niche named a “duct”. This makes it a safer choice for beginners because there are no spinning blades to nick fingers, and they are relatively low maintenance. The most dangerous are “turbine ducted” RC jets, simply because they run on real jet fuel. Yes, the same stuff they put in your airplane before you go on a business trip. This makes them intensely faster than their battery powered counterparts. Flying one of these RC jets is about as close to flying a real jet as most of us will get. The third most popular type of RC jet plane is commonly known as a “pusher” RC jet. They get their name from the single propeller mounted in the very center of the rear of the plane that “pushes” the RC jet through the air. These are the most aerodynamic and maneuverable of the three different types of RC jets.
Safety, of course, is a big issue when flying RC jet planes. An inexperienced RC jet plane flier can turn an exhilarating turbine ducted RC jet into a flying fatality. Beginners should try to navigate towards the ducted fan RC jets because of the hidden propeller and engine, and because they usually require very little maintenance. Pusher RC jets are also ideal for beginner fliers because they are simple to control. In all cases, no matter the type of RC jet, there are a few basic safety rules to remember that could make the difference between a potentially fatal accident and a perfect flying outing. The first should be common sense, but just in case, NEVER EVER fly any type of RC jet around crowded areas or telephone poles. Secondly, everyone that is to be involved in the flying of the RC jets should be properly educated on safety and flying procedures before they are even allowed to touch the radio controller. Most importantly, children should ALWAYS be CONSTANTLY supervised when allowed to fly RC jets to help reduce the risk of serious injury. Other than that, enjoy your R.C jet flying experience as safely and fully as possible.

If you are looking to get into the hobby of remote control jet planes you are going to need to know some of the basics about your RC jet turbine. Turbine RC jets can be a fun hobby for people of any age level. There are some important things you have to do before you simply jump in and start flying jets around however. By starting with the basics of how an RC jet works you will be better equipped to both fly and build your own RC jets.
RC jets are very similar to other RC airplanes. What separates an RC jet from a regular RC airplane is the method of propulsion for one and the speed for another. Jets can be a lot more difficult to fly than a simple prop model plane. Before you start flying RC jets I would recommend getting a trainer prop plane to learn on. Once you get significant experience with that you will be much more prepared to use you RC jet turbine correctly.
The other thing to remember about RC jets is that they are expensive. A single engine costs around $5000 and that does not include any of the other parts like the plane and radio controls. But if you are looking for a hobby that captures all the realism of truly flying a jet than an RC jet plane is the way to go. Many of the RC jet turbines available today are true jet engines. As recently as ten years ago this was not possible as the previous engines were either simple props made to look like jets or pulse jets that were a lot more like a rocket than a true jet. This changed and because of manufacturers like JetCat you can experience a true jet in a remote control form factor. The engines are now centrifugal flow turbines. These engines allow air entering the turbine to be thrown out as it passes over the spinning impeller. This air is greatly compressed before it enters the combustion chamber. This will increase the temperature and pressure of the air, the exact conditions that are in a true life size, real world jet engine.
Once the air is placed under pressure the fuel is introduced. This highly pressurized rich fuel mix is ignited and it then explodes in the chamber. Because of the shape of the engine this air is forced out the back creating a significan amount of thrust. The only tricky part to these engines is getting them started. In order to do that the air has to be compressed and the impeller and turbine fans spun up to the proper speed for fuel introduction. Once the engines are going however they truly are a site to behold.
If you are an RC plane enthusiast who is looking for the next challenge than stepping up to an RC jet turbine is the way to go. The planes are faster, more responsive, and much more fun to fly if you know what you are doing. While prop planes are fun there is nothing quite like the sound of a jet engine being fired up or your plane screaming across the sky.
